The Kansas State Fair

Every year, my family tries to go to the Kansas State Fair. I remember as a child only missing a couple of years of going. It was a tradition. When I was young, we would meet my grandma, and my uncle, aunt and cousins and we spent the day together. We always would go through the 4-H buildings first to see my cousins' projects and then we would go through all the other buildings to get FREE stuff!

We always went back to the cars to eat lunch, that we brought, which always included my favorite, beef salad sandwiches! Yum, just writing that makes me crave it. After lunch there were more buildings and all the animals to see. We then ate supper in the fair grounds and then it was RIDES time!

Our tradition hasn't changed much. Although my grandma is no longer around (but I KNOW if she was she would be there!) and we don't meet my cousins anymore, my children's grandma and grandpa, aunts, uncle and cousin' are there. We skip the 4-H building because there are no projects to look at, but we start with the building, go to lunch, see more buildings and animals, enjoy some fair food, and then we have fun with rides!

Because we were going to be in Kansas a whole week and during fair week, we decided to go two different days. The first day, we were going to mainly focus on the buildings, and the animals, and enjoy a couple of rides. The second day, which was $1 day, we were going to revisit a couple of buildings and see some animals, but the main focus was rides, rides and more rides!

There are so many pictures that I would do a montage, but my sister doesn't like them as well and she's been waiting for these State Fair posts. So I'm going to have lots of pictures. You can click on the picture to enlarge it.

A Midway Ride

Each kid got a "free" ride. Brooke, Preston, and Landon did the 'Starship 3000' where you get into a spaceship like ride and it spins so fast that the force of gravity makes the "seats" slide up to the ceiling. So there are no pictures of the kids, but you can see the ride in the background. Megan and Tanner can't "do" spinning so they did 'Bumper Cars'.
Then Uncle Matt and Aunt Theresa took all the kids, minus Kaylie on the Ferris Wheel.
So where was Kaylie?
At supper she had a little fit and didn't treat her Aunt Tammy right. So Aunt Tammy said you are going to say sorry or you're going to sit in time out. The rest of us went on and went through our last building and then we were ready to let the kids ride their ride. I called Tammy so I could talk to Kaylie and tell her that if she didn't say "sorry" she was going to lose her ride. Tammy was already almost to us and this is how she came.
While the rest were on the Ferris Wheel, Jeff, Tammy and I were checking out the "Freak Show" that was set up right next to it. The guy below was sitting out there and they said that he was the youngest munchkin on Wizard of Oz and that he was also on Willy Wonka, but now he owns the show. I don't know if it was all lies but I saw an interview with the only living munchkins and he wasn't one of them.

R.I.P. Kia

KIA
October 2007 - September 11, 2009

Back in September we were headed to Kansas for several reasons... 1) the KS State Fair, 2) Standardized testing for Preston and Tanner, and 3) Celebrate Landon's 7th birthday.

The one "pet" we had was a little beta fish that was given to us for free back in Oct. 2007, and we spent $3.?? for the food. We were guessing it was a girl because the lack of color so we searched for a name. Each kid threw a name in a hat and we drew one. Kaylie's name won and our fish was now named after an elephant in a Barbie movie, Kia!
Anytime we would have to head out of town we would ask 'Auntie' Jeannie to fishy-sit for us. So the plans were to drop her off as we were heading out of town.

The morning of September 11th, yes...a very solemn day of remembrance anyway...the boys came up and said something was wrong with Kia because she looked gray and was laying on the bottom of the bowl. I came down the stairs, and there she was...gone :( I had two who had a hard time with this "death". Preston and Tanner got quite emotional losing their one and only pet.

I then had the hard job of talking "funeral" arrangements with the kids. "Kids, we can either flush her down the toilet so she can go to the ocean." (That philosophy is from Finding Nemo and it's OK that my kids buy into that.) "Or we can bury her."

The majority decided they'd rather bury her because "if she went to the ocean she'd be dead anyway" and if "we bury her then they would always know where she was at." Burying it was! Although Landon had no qualms flushing her and that another fish would eat her.

I had my first day of Friday morning Bible study that morning so I had to head out and I left instructions with Jeff to bury her and maybe have a "service". When I returned home, Jeff was pretty tense and frustrated and Kia was still laying at the bottom of her bowl. The burial fell on me.

We chose a spot under the treehouse by the fence. Preston dug the hole and we all, minus Jeff, went out to say our farewells. We didn't have time to make a cross for her to mark her grave, but we covered it with some stones to keep the prairie dogs away and so we could finish the "marker" when we got back from Kansas.

Kia was a good fish. I believe she lived a good "dash" . :)

Bringing In Fall

I found this in my draft folder. It was written the first day of Fall, September 22, 2009.

Today is truly a fall day. Right now, at 12:55 pm, my Weather Bug says it is 46 degrees. It's overcast with an occasional light rain. I've got a couple of "purple" kids because they are wearing their summer clothes even though I urged them to put on their sweats. I just can't bring myself to turn on the heat. I at least want the filter changed before that happens.
On this cold, autumny day, we made some taco soup and caramel apples. Does anything say fall more then that?
