June's Places

Lake Dillon in Frisco
(May 30-31, I know it's not really June,
but school was "officially" over.)

On Memorial Day weekend, we headed up to a condo on Lake Dillon, that was free to us.

We hiked and grandma tried to help the kids look for frogs.

Fort Logan National Cemetery
(June 1)
My parents really wanted to visit this cemetery.
Because we were in Frisco on Memorial Day we went the day after.
They were picking up the flags.

We got to see the headstones for some Buffalo Soldiers.

It was a new experience for the kids.

Louisville
(June 19)

We went looking for a good place to take the kids that is different then our usual places.
We first went to a park that had a pond with frogs, a park and a splash pad.

We then came to a lake where there was a Model Yacht Club racing their sailboats.

We then found a park, in the shade, to have a picnic.
There was a playground but I got no pictures of it,
but they found a huge apple tree to climb.

Then we found another lake, with a park...

...and another tree to climb...

...although it was a little scarier...

...and an unclaimed fishing pole with the bobber getting pulled under the water...

The owners were actually on the paddle boats and they were sure nothing would bite while they were out so they left the pole in the water. For fear of the pole getting pulled into the lake, we allowed Preston to reel it in. The owners then came up and took the hook out and took pictures of their "catch they didn't catch".

Lake Dillon Again
(June 30 - July 3)

An early (pre-rise of me) and a little later in the morning view.

This was one more chance to get up into the mountains with a free place to stay. This needs an entry all it's own. It was an "interesting" trip to say the least.

June's Special People

I'm going to begin with some special people we've seen this month.

We brought in the month of June with a visit from my parents.

As soon as the school year was done for my mom,
they headed straight out to Colorado.
We visited Lake Dillon, we garage sale'd three different days,
enjoyed a church picnic, visited Ft. Logan National Cemetery,
drove down memory lane (to the VA and back, minus dad),
we watched movies and just plain enjoyed each others company.

Some other special people this month, was our neighbors/ the kids' friends.

They are selling their house and moving to New Mexico.
It is a sad day for all of my kids.
"Big" Tanner was the only male friend in the neighborhood that the kids had.
"Brown" Allie (referring to her hair color because we have a "red" Ally in the cul-de-sac also)
was Kaylie's age and they were friends also.
We will also miss their parents.
They came to know Christ through us,
they were part of our life group and it was great having them as neighbors.

A Year To Remember

(Taken June 22,2009, right before surgery)

A year ago today,
was the beginning of a summer we will never forget.

My parents' trip out to watch our kids while we went to a homeschool convention,
turned into a 6 week stay. (Bouncing between the VA hospital and our house.)

The night of June 16, 2009 was when we spent all night in an ER

and finding out that dad had a mild heart attack,
which then followed with finding out he needed open heart surgery.

The weeks then followed with a few complications:

~the night after surgery his blood pressure was dropping dangerously low.
I remember clearly walking into SICU throughout the night to check on him.
He was trying to communicate but couldn't because of the ventilator.
I had the feeling of complete helplessness.
~a wound that needed a wound vac, and in-home nursing visits
~a blood clot in the lung, that required another week in the hospital

~having such thin blood,
because they were trying to regulate his blood thinner from the clot,

that we had to make another trip to the ER

A year later,
dad is doing well.

~He lost some weight.
~He is exercising throughout the week.

~He is on the go.

He used to drive us and sit in the car, now he is out shopping with us,

helping my sisters wash cars,
and doing other things like that.
~His attitude towards life and others is just a little better.

A couple of weeks ago was the first visit back to Colorado since the whole ordeal started.
Dad had some trepidation with coming
and I know the memories came flashing back as soon as he arrived.
As the week went on, I could tell that dad was becoming more relaxed.
Hopefully is won't be a whole year before they visit again.

(These were taken June 5, 2010 right before they headed back home.)

Happy Anniversary!

Forty-four years ago today,

Robert Allen married Margaret Ann,

and that was the beginning of our family.

My mother, basically was born and raised in the same town, while my dad had moved often as a child. I remember hearing from him, I was born here, and I went to school, here and here and here and here...well you get the point.

The summer before my dad's senior year, they moved to Holyrood Kansas. There was a new principal in town (my grandpa), with two sons and a daughter. Mom and dad met when they were 17. Dad gave mom "a lot of attention. He was persistent."

Their first date was a movie in town. Mom wore her favorite outfit, a brown vest and skirt. "As I was getting out of the car, I looked down and noticed I had two different shoes on!"
She was embarrassed!

They started going "steady" before the Christmas of 1964. Going "steady" in mom's mind "was a very strong commitment, which naturally led to engagement."

At Christmas, their first Christmas of knowing each other, Dad gave mom some perfume by Avon called "Here's My Heart". Mom gave dad a bracelet that you can have your name engraved on, although she's not sure if she had his name on it or made him do it himself. :o)

Mom doesn't remember how dad proposed those many years ago, but she remembers going and picking out her engagement ring in the town 30 miles away. "It was neat and so sparkly, so exciting and a whole $100. I remember holding my hand in an obvious way so that it would be noticed."

On February 19, 1966, both of my parents were 18 years old. Mom was wearing the "most beautiful wedding dress I ever saw! With white heels and a beautiful veil."

As her daddy was leading her to the front of the church and up the three or four steps, my mom stepped on her dress. Instead of correcting it, right then and there, she continued to walk up the steps, on her dress. Which naturally made her hunch over more and more! I'm sure it was not funny at the time, but it is something that's been laughed at many times since.

As they say...
The rest is history!
