Sibling Love

Today, we went to the park and had a picnic for lunch. It was a great couple of hours, especially when I was sitting in the shade. (Being a mile closer to the sun makes a noticeable difference.)

As I was watching my four kids playing on the equipment, I was noticing the differences on how my boys relate to their sister. Tanner, who is my middle son and is 7 years old, is a very compassionate kid. He is the one who is right there to make sure she stays safe. When she is stuck some where, like a tree or a retaining wall, he is the one who runs back to help her down and to be with her so she's not by herself. At the park, he was helping her up walls, holding her hand when they crossed the swinging bridge and he was holding her up so she could go across the monkey bars.

Now Landon who is my youngest son at 5 years of age, and closest to Kaylie's age, they are "playmates". This past year when the two oldest boys were doing school, Landon and Kaylie were left to entertain themselves. Landon is the one who says, "Come on Kaylie, let us do ..." When they sit on the floor to watch a movie I often watch him sit right by her and he puts his arm around her. They play together and get into trouble together.

Now Preston, who is the oldest and 9 years old, plays with his sister, and watches over her too, but he throws a twist in there. Preston has some characteristics that I believe is fairly common in firstborns. He knows how to manipulate the younger ones so he can gets his way. Kaylie, who is the youngest and pretty brave, is a good target for a lot of these manipulations. When playing outside he gets her to ring doorbells when he's been told not to. He will get her to take things he knows they shouldn't take, and I could keep going on and on. He tries to make it look like he's innocent in the matters.

I know that all the boys love their sister, and they show it in their own way. It will be interesting to watch the dynamics as they grow. Kaylie loves her brothers and she can be a pretty good little momma to them. She even calls them "my boys". I often hear her ask, "Where are my boys?"

I've been blessed with four lovely kiddos, and I need to remember they are blessings from God, even if it doesn't always feel that way!
