Wednesday, the kids and I headed to the library to get their first prize of reading books in week 1. We also decided to take in the "magic" show they were putting on.
We are very up front and honest with our kids (there's no "Santa Claus", St. Nicholas yes, but a big man, with a white beard and a red suit that comes in the night, no. There's no Easter bunny, but they get baskets, and there's no tooth fairy, but they get $1.00 for a tooth) so of course with the whole "magic" thing we share how it is illusions.
They're not so sure about this show.
The "Magic Fairy"
So in the beginning of the show my kids were watching the "magic fairy" with straight faces, and with the occasional "This ain't real." When the "fairy" tried to get crowd participation, Kaylie was the only one to grab "things" you couldn't see, to blow towards the "fairy" to make the "magic" happen. After one trick of "making" money come from the air and out of ears, noses, etc., the "fairy" had all the kids (which was only Kaylie out of my 4) grab stuff out of the air and throw it to her then she grabbed in all and "boom" there were a bunch of dollars in her hand. Kaylie said in awe, "Man, she's good."

After the money trick the boys started getting more into the show, first Preston being as "cool" as he could be in the matter, and then Tanner and Landon. They started participating more and smiling more. They caught "fairy bubbles", and some were suppose to turn into crystals (a glass marble) and at one point she asked the kids, "Are you starting to believe in magic?" Kaylie, sitting on my lap, said, "Yessssss." Landon turned to her and said, "Un-uh. It's not real." Kaylie very defensively said, "I believe!" I had to put an end to it because who knows what kind of brawl could have started!

TOOO funny! Our VBS bible story presenter (home schooled, contest-winning high schooler) incorporated unexpected "magic tricks" into each day's lesson. You should've heard the kids the first day. Gaaaaasp. Then, "That's NOT real. Magic is NOT real!!" The story-teller was prepared to explain to the kids that only God can do magic and his "tricks" were just practiced, fun slight-of-hand. Apparently the two of us are not the only parents who teach their kids about "magic." ;) Rock on, sister!
